Oceanfront Beach Nourishment Across the Outer Banks
To counter the effects of the natural beach erosion happening all along the US coast, some communities on the Outer Banks have started beach nourishment programs to deal with the beach erosion here on the OBX. During beach nourishment, sand is pumped onto the beaches by some of the local municipalities. The sand is dredged from nearby offshore sites which contain sand compatible in size and texture to the original beach sand. The sand is then piped up onto the beach and leveled out with heavy equipment. Shortly after completion, it is hardly noticeable that a nourishment project just too place. Most of the towns on the Outer Banks have instituted some type of beach nourishment program, but not all areas are covered. (To be sure you aren't looking in one of these areas without the added protection of a nourished beach Call 1-800-647-1868) In some of the villages on Hatteras Island the oceanfront belongs to the National Park Service which hinders beach nourishment projects. Below are links to the beach nourishment programs that are happening or planned for future scheduling in each town or county in the OBX.
